{"id":553,"date":"2005-04-07T06:49:18","date_gmt":"2005-04-07T11:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/meisterplanet.com\/journal\/2005\/04\/07\/geek-language-results-in-less-secure-users\/"},"modified":"2005-04-07T06:49:18","modified_gmt":"2005-04-07T11:49:18","slug":"geek-language-results-in-less-secure-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meisterplanet.com\/journal\/2005\/04\/07\/geek-language-results-in-less-secure-users\/","title":{"rendered":"Geek Language Results in Less Secure Users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/technology\/4413155.stm\">BBC News<\/a> has a piece up that suggests that the overuse of computer &#8220;geek speak&#8221; in news items and warnings to the public can actually result in a decrease in overall security.  <\/p>\n<p>According to the article, the problem is that terms like &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phishing\">phishing<\/a>&#8221; (fake emails designed to defraud someone of valuable information) or &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trojan_horse_(computing)\">trojans<\/a>&#8221;  (malicious programs hidden inside other programs) can confuse average computer users and leave them uninformed of the true nature of the danger described.<\/p>\n<p>The solution is obvious, though made difficult out of habit.
