Mysterious iPhone Line Forms at Apple Store

Engagdet.com is reporting that a line has formed at the 5th Avenue Apple Store for no official reason and has photos of the queue posted to prove it.

While rumors about a 3G iPhone have become rampant across the Internet, it’s likely that this is, as one of the comments posted on Engagdet suggests, a stunt put on by Improve Everywhere.

Hey Wait … Isn’t That Meister in the New York Times?

The New York Times had a Small Business section today with an article entitled You Can Call for I.T. Help Without Hiring a Whole Crew that talks about computer support options for those smaller organizations that can’t hire a full or even part time technical support person.

From the article:

Amy Wright, a collision repair consultant who works from her home in Willoughby Hills, Ohio, had Geek Squad set up her computer and digital camera and the wireless Internet connection in her home office, as well as the Sony video recorder her husband uses. When it came time to upgrade her computers, printers and monitors, she spent about $2,800 at Best Buy.

“You can call them for help, but you don’t have to have them on a full-time basis,” Ms. Wright said of Geek Squad.

It’s definitely a little weird seeing your photo in a major newspaper, but I’m glad I got the chance.

The Great Snow Storm of 2008

The Great Snow Storm of 2008

It’s been an interesting weekend here in northeast Ohio, with the local media declaring this one of the biggest snowfalls since the great blizzard of ’78. I’m not sure if I would say it was anywhere near that scale, but it was pretty amazing to see that much snow hit in a single day. Some parts of the area reported up to 20 inches of snow on Saturday.

All of that made for plenty of adventure during my work day in the field with the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle. The snow came down quickly enough that the snow plows simply weren’t able to keep up, and many cities stopped the use of salt until later to conserve their supply. During my 9 hour shift, I came across numerous vehicles stranded on the side of the roads, including a police cruiser, a semi truck and several snow plows.

I was able to make it through the day by using the slow and steady approach, making sure to stick to the main roads whenever possible and avoiding any routes that involved hills. Probably the biggest threat came from all those independent snow plow operators who would come darting out of a residential drive way without looking, or who often drove with their big yellow snow plow blades leaning dangerous across into my oncoming lane.

Of course, with the way Ohio weather is, we’ll probably be back to 50°F weather by the end of the week, then have another snow storm the next. Is it summer, yet?

Michigan Spam King Indicted

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Michigan man often cited by experts as one of the premier sources of junk email, Alan Ralsky, has been charged with violating federal anti-spam laws in Detroit based on the results of a three year investigation.

Ralsky, called the “Spam King” by internet security experts, is unique in the field as he’s often given interviews to news reporters in which he defends his self-proclaimed “legitimate” advertising practices.

… And That’s Why I Was Late.

View from a few miles away from the Painesville, Ohio train fire.

This was the view I had of the large train fire that occurred yesterday in Painesville, Ohio. While I was never less than a few miles away from the actual location, I could see the large, black pillars of smoke very clearly throughout the day.

Handling traffic through Painesville is difficult on normal days due to all the construction. However, with all the traffic into and out of the city due to the incident, things slowed to a craw. A fact that wasn’t helped by parts of the two highways that pass right by the on-going fire having been closed by the police. It took me nearly an hour to drive what is normally a 10 minute trip.
