Mozilla updates …

Since Mozilla has release candidates available for Firefox 0.9 RC and Mozilla 1.7 RC 3, I figured Id take the latest version of their lite browser for a spin on the Fedora Core 2 Linux workstation.

Im not a huge fan of the new interface icons, but theyre not annoying in any way, more of a meh feeling thats accompanied just about every Phoenix, Firebird, Firefox release icon set prior.

The real joy comes from having Google.coms site pop up and ready to go within seconds of clicking on the Firefox icon. Nice and fast is always a good thing in an application that I use probably more often than anything outside of my email client.

I havent really gone to enough sites to comment on compatibility, so that will be something to look for, though I doubt there will be many changes from the 0.8 release, which I had few problems with.

3D photos on the cheap …

Ive seen a number of images popping up online that use the simple technique of taking a photo of an object and then another one moving the camera slightly and then creating an animated .gif file that flicks back and forth between them at high speed. The effect is very similar to that used in the creation of 3D images and movies that require special glasses.

I tried it myself, and while my first tries are far from perfect, it does work. First photo experiment.

The effect would be better if I had a tripod to ensure the same height between photos as well as measuring out a radius from the center of the car to rotate around. The biggest improvement would be to decrease the amount of distance between the images to make the change more subtle, but for now it works.

Update on Fedora Linux dual boot bug …

From Fedoranews.org:

It turns out that the bug (#115980) is a result of a few subtle but key changes within the 2.6 kernel. A certain functionality with regards to hard disk geometry has been pulled out, as the kernel developers thought it would be better if userspace utilities took care of this instead. The Bugzilla bug is related to CHS geometry problems, which most likely stems from an error within the parted utility, addressing the BIOS incorrectly. It turns out that BIOS updates tend to fix problems for many users that have been bitten by this “bug”. On newer machines, this is basically non-reproducible.

Possible Fedora Core 2 and WinXP problem …

Bug# 115980: Cannot boot to WinXP after installing Fedora Core 2.

For those of you who are interested in creating a dual-boot system running both Fedora Linux and Microsoft Windows XP should wait to ensure that the above problem has been fixed in the FC2 release before installing.

Some users of Fedora Core Test 3 have noted that they are unable to boot into their Windows partition after install, due to a problem that may be GRUB related.

Otherwise, the torrent for Fedora Core 2 (“tettnang”) is now available.
