If You’re So Smart, You Fix It!

Geek Squad - IdeaFestival Website

If you’ve been to your local Best Buy this week, you may have noticed signs advertising Geek Squad‘s IdeaFestival, an online contest being held to find submissions for, as the site puts it, “novel solutions for some of the world’s sustainability problems” using technology.

There are a number of entries already in categories such as “E-Waste”, “Power Conservation” and “Untapped Resources”, but anyone can submit their ideas for the possibility of winning a trip down to the “2007 IdeaFestival” in Louisville, Kentucky to work with a number of well-known thinkers on expanding their submissions.

Nintendo Announces WiiWare

Newsweek has a piece up on Nintendo’s WiiWare, which will bring new downloadable games to the system, much like those available through Microsoft’s Xbox Live 360 Arcade.

Skeptics in the gaming community, however, point out that Nintendo’s online offerings to this point have been lacking at best, with an online friend code system that can best be described as “lacking” when compared to the Microsoft service.

That said, fans and critics alike will have plenty of time to argue over predictions of the service’s capabilities as the first games won’t be available until Spring of 2008.

LOLCODE: Coming to a Compiler Near You

If you’ve spent any amount of time around popular web forums, you’ve already come across “LOLSPEAK”, the latest evolutionary step-child to the “l33tsp34k” of the 80s and 90s.

Well, LOLSPEAK has birthed a new offspring, LOLCODE, a programming language consisting of phrases like “O NOES” as syntax.

An example:

HAI
CAN HAS STDIO?
I HAS A VAR
IM IN YR LOOP
      UP VAR!!1
      VISIBLE VAR
IZ VAR BIGGER THAN 10? KTHXBYE
IM OUTTA YR LOOP
KTHXBYE

Nintendo Wii: Another Mainstream Trend Joined

Wii Remote

I’ve finally broken down and joined in the growing tsunami of Nintendo Wii owners thanks to a recent surge in supply here in northeast Ohio.

Games for the system aren’t quite as plentiful yet as I’d like, though I suspect the Wii will always serve as a diversion from my usual PC and Xbox 360 gamer fare. Still, I’m sure it’ll be a hit with my non-gamer family members, particularly the Meister Mom. She’ll absolutely love Wii Sport’s bowling.

Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Released

Ubuntu LinuxToday marked the release of the latest version of the Ubuntu 7.04 open-source operating system, and even as a long-time Linux user, I’m impressed.

One of the harder tests many of us like to put a new distro through is simply trying an install on a laptop. Laptops generally have more specialized and proprietary hardware that’s not quite as supported outside of the manufacturers as desktop components. Ubuntu 7.04, I’m glad to say, passed with flying colors, even detecting my wireless card without issue and allowing me to use all the pretty eyecandy on the integrated intel video chipset.

One really neat aspect of the install CD, available for free download, is that when you boot from the install disc, it acts as a “LiveCD” that allows you to go for a test run of the operating system before anything is installed on your computer. Once you’re satisfied that Ubuntu is the way to go, you simply click the “install now” icon on the desktop and the process begins.

There are a number of other improvements I really like, such as the ability of the system to run “restricted drivers”, which are often closed-source software from the manufacturers themselves, right from startup. This cuts down on the hunt and chase process for hardware drivers that often occurs after a new Linux install. I also liked the automatic video and audio codec search and install feature that starts as soon as you try and run a video.

Overall, another solid release for the Ubuntu team.
