Shipping: Another Point for Gift Cards

I came out of the UPS Store today $20 lighter after having shipped out two presents across country for my family. Considering how long it took to wrap the presents and get them ready to ship, along with the cost of boxes, bubble wrap and shipping, I’m very much seeing the allure of simply giving gift cards out to friends and family.

Are gift cards classy, thoughtful gifts? No, yet only having to toss one in an envelope to wrap it up and ship it out is definitely a point in their favor.

5 Excuses For Not Fixing Your Family’s Computer

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, and for most people that means a grand dinner with the family filled with cheer and good food. Unless, that is, your family knows you’re a computer tech guy, in which it means that you’re going to be hit up for advice and service in the same way your doctor sister and car mechanic brother are.

In light of this, here are 5 handy (if extreme) excuses that you can use to get out of fixing that family computer while the rest of your family enjoys their turkey dinner:

  1. Alien Invasion Excuse – “Oh, I can’t touch that computer. See, I’m saving my skills for when we’re invaded by an extraterrestrial army of alien creatures bent on our destruction, who just happen to run their saucers on an operating system I can easily hack using my Apple MacBook.”
  2. Lawsuit Excuse – “Unfortunately, I’m no longer legally allowed to fix computers. You see, the virus and spyware makers got together and sued me for being too anti-competitive for their business. Turns out the judge who heard the case loves pop-up ads!”
  3. Amnesia Excuse – “I would love to fix your computer, but you see, I was in this tragic blimp accident a few months ago. I came out with a pretty nasty bump on the head, and ever since then, I can’t remember a single thing about fixing computers. The doctors say it’s the darndest thing!”
  4. Cycle of Life Excuse – “Remember when they were trying to explain to Simba in the Lion King that everything has it’s time and place? This is the same thing, except it’s your computer that we’re going to let pass on instead of your lion dad.”
  5. The Bright Side of Life Excuse – “You know how dad is always complaining about all that spam email he keeps getting? Think of not fixing your computer as the best way to stop that problem.”

Of course, most of these excuses are only going to end in pain when you have to deal with your family later.

Meister House Halloween Tour 2008

After a few weeks of setup, the Meister House is ready for Halloween 2008. Since we had the lights up to show to some friends, I took a few minutes to walk through the setup to show both our indoor and outdoor decorations.

We’ve got over a hundred animated figures inside the garage, all waiting for the kids to come and press their buttons or trigger their light sensors. Outside, we’ve got animated skeletons, giant inflatable decorations and a new entry: the computerized graveyard light show.

I’m looking forward to seeing the kids and their families and friends that always make the Halloween night a lively one here at the Meister House.

Making Halloween at the Meister House

The Meister House is busy with work put into its Halloween makeover. The above photo is of a table full of indoor decorations that we put on display inside our over-sized garage for both our annual Halloween party, as well as Trick-or-Treat with all the kids a few days later.

There will be more pictures to come as things come together. It’s a lot of work, but the reaction Halloween gets here at the Meister House every year is worth it.

Halloween Project Initial Test

I’m currently working on a Halloween light-show project to add a little technology to this year’s display. I have a programmable light controller from D-Light Designs that allows a program called Aurora to tie light patterns in with music and video.

In the above video, I’m only using 7 of the 16 channels on the controller to do an initial test run using a light and music sequence available from Wowlights to make 5 gravestones come alive to the song “This is Halloween”.

I plan on adding at least two “singing” pumpkins over the next few weeks, and then move the display outwards to fit in with the rest of our annual Halloween decorations.
