Seven Levels of Windows Vista

Ars Technica has an interesting story up in regards to the seven versions of Microsoft’s next operating system, Windows Vista.

Personally, I think they’re over-complicating the market with seven different versions of an operating system in a world where many consumers can barely tell the difference between Windows XP Home and Professional. Most end-users incorrectly believe that Professional is just XP Home with all the Microsoft Office applications added.

Removing Symantec’s Norton software

Uninstalling any of Symantec‘s Norton software line can sometimes result in leftover registry settings and other potential conflicts in a system. Fortunately, Symantec has an available tool to remove this obstacles by the name of SymNRT.

The list of Norton products this tool will automatically remove includes:

  • Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005
  • Norton AntiVirus Professional 2004
  • Norton AntiVirus 3, 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
  • Norton SystemWorks 2004/2004 Professional Edition
  • Norton SystemWorks 2005/2005 Premier edition
  • Norton Password Manager 2004
  • Norton Internet Security 2004/2005
  • Norton Internet Security 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
  • Norton Personal Firewall 2004/2005
  • Norton AntiSpam 2004/2005
  • Ghost 2003 or Ghost Version 9.0

The tool works slowly, as it’s scanning your entire system for any Norton remains, but it is very effective at what it does.

IDE to USB Cable

IDE to USB cable

I just ordered USBGeek.com‘s $35 IDE to USB Cable after reading a review for the tool here.

Data backups are a common task at my job, meaning that I would often be forced to remove a harddrive from a misbehaving machine and install it into a workstation with a DVD burner available. The ability to simply attach this cable and it’s matching power adapter to the drive and connecting that drive to any USB 2.0 port will save me considerable time and effort.

I’ll write something up about my experiences with the device when it arrives and I have a chance to use it in the work environment.
